How to Sell Yourself in Two Minutes

By Angela Rose

In this fast-paced world, time is of the essence. From sound bites to tweets, text messages to acronyms; many of us have become adept at disseminating and absorbing information as quickly as we can. This tech-fueled ingenuity is certainly useful when tweeting at stoplights or gleaning knowledge from a scrolling news ticker. Fortunately, for job seekers, it is also quite useful when meeting potential employers at a career fair.

Career fairs enable job seekers to interact with dozens of potential employers in one location. A prepared professional can leave a career fair with numerous job leads or even interviews on their calendar. The best niche job fairs attract employers from top companies in the industry. You'll find recruiters and hiring managers as well as a unique opportunity to make a personal impression.

Hot Topic -- Advice from the Experts

What is the best advice you can give to a job seeker approaching your booth at a Career Fair?

"Make a game plan of the exhibitor booths you want to visit by researching exhibitors beforehand or, at minimum, review the ads in the exhibitor directory. Some booths can have quite a line, so it is in your best interest to make sure it is a worthwhile wait. Once you narrow it down, approach an exhibitor's booth with confidence -- eye contact, a smile, and a firm handshake."
- Recruiter, Integrated Project Management Company, Inc.

"Remember that stopping by a company's booth is not a formal interview, it's a chance to make contact and network with a company representative as well as learn more about an employer. Be self aware, your appearance and your approach are important parts of your first impression; an unkempt appearance and aggressive approach will not work to your advantage. Do your research ahead of time; knowing who the company is, what they do, and what relevant jobs they have open will capture our attention and foster a mutually beneficial conversation."
- Recruiter, Vertex Pharmaceuticals
